I've been trying to figure out Broken Down from the Reptile cd, (not Pilgrim as I mistakenly entered before,) and can't get the transition chord from (Em to Am7.) Actually I'm not quite sure about all the others either. Don't know if you've got it down or not, but my ear's really not all that great at figuring out some of his chord techniques, and the piece was left off of the songbook due to "copyright restrictions.) Thanks for any help you can give, as well as from before (sorry I got it wrong in the first place). ps I like your site.

Anyone?

I think you mean Broken Hearted. It's in E major / C# minor. Chords from When the wind ... heart are Eadd9/C#m7/Asus2. Other chords used are F#m7, E, B. It's not the I/IV/V Blues progression ;)

I stumbled onto this site doing a search for "Classical Cass" has EC done a rendition of this instrumental? I would love to hear it!!

Just go down this page until July 09, there was already this question. EC did not play it, it's from M. Williams and appears on a soundtrack EC wrote.

Did you look into the Layla songbook? It's OK, the original contains about 3 guitar tracks, Duane and EC. For the tutorial I only used 1 track. Most people can't play 2 guitars at the same time ;).

What a wonderful site. I have been playing guitar since 1965. After my tour with the Army I went to college (1972) and majored in music. I write and record my own songs. In the last 3 years my writing style changed to include influences in Jazz and Blues...prior I wrote mainly ballads in the style of Fogelberg, Hayward, J. Browne and Lightfoot. Where as these were good company it was never the less time for a change. The information you have on pentatonic scales may seem trivial to some guitarists but to me it is of immense value. I appreciate people like you who do not hoard their knowledge...our world really needs more altruism. Thank you very much my friend. I have added your site to my 'Favorites'. Adios! A.B.

Thankyou for creating such a great site. I've been browsing EC sites for years and only just discovered this by accident, (whilst researching about Blackie). I've been playing for 20+ years and discovered Clapton in '86 - and since then I've been hooked on his music , especially the blues. I've seen him live around 15 times now , often from the front row spellbound. I think we share the same record & video collection after checking out yours. Keep up the good work and continue to spread the word - Blues !!

I have played bass for over twenty years. I purchased a strat this year to begin my 20 year plus desire to learn to play blues lead. I have listened to EC for years and almost exclusively at times. I sat here last night with strat in hand and listened to Five Long Years over and over again. Realizing I am the total novice when it comes to blues lead, I am still absolutely astonished at the sounds that EC produces from his strat. It is simply beyond comprehension at times. Thank you for a wonderful web site, all of the info that I need is right here, now all that is missing is the miracle that allows EC to play the way he does. Thank you, GJ

GK, I like Fender and Eric started out in 1946. I was once at a J. Mayall concert at the Filmore East somewhere in the early '70's or possibly "69 not sure, where Mayalls band was using "percussion" Bass instead of drums and I noticed a guy sitting off to the side by one of the exit doors and I said, wow! that's Eric Clapton. I was sitting next to Ginger Baker (big dude). I went over to Eric and said, hey man I thought you were suppossed to be up in Boston at a "Blind Faith" concert. He smiled and put his finger to his lips and made a shhh sound and smiled. I shook his hand and smiled and went back to my seat. Anyway, after many years started to play the blues again and I am having a great personal trip! Thanks Gerd, you have a lot to be proud of, thanks. Dan (FOXX) from Flushing New York

Do you know if there is someone who plays bass with a slowhand-like technique? I mean, with the thumb as a kind of counterbalance, holding the bass neck with the palm of the hand? I ask this because I started playing the bass like the guitar, using this "slowhand technique"... I enjoyed to see that Eric Clapton and others play guitar with this style... Great Site!

hi.I'm here again. After my being here last time by accident,I fell in love with this site(not you, webmaster).I've downloaded everything here and read every words of the articles carefully.Although there are some bugs(like spelling errors),nobody can deny its excellance. The fullness of the content, the level of the design ,and most important, the humanity of the site.Reading articles here are not hard at all. You can learn a lot while reading and smiling.I can tell that the webmaster must be a man who get a great heart. He has faith in life, which is encouraging me . After reading the whole content with care,I found some questions I asked last time were needless, cause most of them have been represented in the content of the site(Thanks for the goodness of the webmaster. He explained them again to me.I love you, just like the love between brothers, don't misunderstand.^_^).But some exist(If I am not wrong) and I want to talk about them here: 1.I still dont know how to join the forum of EC,I send the subscription and nothing happened.I dont know how to enter the forum ,either.Where is the address or link?I have no idea at all. 2.Can you(the webmaster,an male angel)add something about choosing equipments.I know there are so many kinds of Guitarss and Effect Processors and amplifiers. What kind of them fit playing blues. For example, how can I choose a right kind of electric guitar to play blues .I know there are about several kinds of pick-up.Some are good for blues ,some are totally bad,and the same to the question of the brand. As I know ,fender is the best fit for blues, right?please give some imformation.

Thanks!

3) I can't tell much about guitars, because I have only two, no effects, no pedals etc. They are OK for me, I didn't play other guitars except a few licks in a shop. As long as it's not a spanish flamenco or classical guitar, you can play the Blues on every axe. A Fender Strat, a Gibson Les Paul or even better an ES-335 or the Epiphone clone the DOT first come to mind, but looking at Albert King also a piece of wood with some strings on it work. A Dobro is build for the Blues, and if you have the money you can get also signature models from many Blues greats - BB King, EC, Robert Cray etc. YOU have to play it, so YOU have to test it. Some players call a strat unplayable, some players need to start bodybuilding before they can hold a Les Paul. There two main things that determine the sound - the pickup (single coil or humbucker) and the body (massive or hollow). So a strat (massive/single coil) sound different to an ES335 (hollow body, humbucker). But this is all very simplified. Good luck ;)

Gerd... First of all, I LOVE your site! VERY cool! Perhaps like you, I've been a long-time Clapton fan, since the first days of Cream, and "Old Love" has got to be one of Eric's best works. I'm a 45 year old, old hippie who's owned a guitar since he was 21 but took far too long to get serious. So here I am. I'm unable to find a teacher in my area, and I don't drive so getting some-where's a challenge, to say the least. Hence, I delve into sites like yours when I get REALLY stuck. Thus, my question, here: The terms "I", "IV" and "V" are often seen in blues gui-tar. Despite having asked at least 3 guitar "teachers" what that MEANS, NONE of them have been able to explain it to me in a way that makes sense. I SEE the symbols but they don't seem to "mean anything" to me in relation to one another. And, if there's a "I" then is there not a "II", "III" and "VI"? And how far does this go? I feel like there's some secret guitar "brotherhood" and one gains entry only if one knows these things. What DOES "I" mean? And "IV"? The rest? I see the symbols and recognize Roman numerals but no one has ever explained what it all MEANS in relation to it all. I TRULY hope you can help, for I'm quite stuck at this point. Perhaps it's just a progression, "I" being the first chord of a blues pro-gression, and could easily be called "apple pie", "aeroplane" or anything else. But looking at, say, a steering wheel without know-ing what it is in relation to the rest of the automobile seems a similar fate to mine. And what of the "II" and "III" and "VI" and such? O, I hope you can help!!!

Help is on the way - it's much easier than you think. You can also read the basics for a detailed explanation. In short, take the standard diatonic major scale (no pentatonic or other specials!) and name each note that belongs to that scale with a roman number (I, ii, iii, IV, V, vi, vii, VIII). For the key of C you get I=C, ii=D, iii=E, IV=F, V=G, vi=A, vii=B and VIII=I=C. If you build a triad chord on each note with only notes from that scale, you get major chords for the I, VI, V and minor chords for the others. Note that the notes with corresponding major chords are written in upper case while the minor chord notes use lower case.

So if you have Blues in C using the I, IV, V progression it means that it's using the chords I=C, IV=F, V=G. In Jazz there are other progressions (I,ii,V or others). Once again, read a bit through this site and you'll find more examples.

First he taught me scales and working with the notes has helped my rythems. Now he wants me to learn tablature. Infoseek search under tablature/Blues brought me to this site. Great!! Can you recommend an easy single string lead/melody tab to start learning with? I'd appreciate it. I can only surf through your site early a.m. hours, this juno i.s.p. is all plugged at normal human hours. Thanks, Dan.

Hello, I just got done searching through your website and I just want to say its amazing! For somebody to take their time and knowledge to help others and not expect anything in return is incredible. Maybe you can give tips on how to set up websites of are own. Also how do you feel about Jimi Hendrix, wondering if you have any tabs on his music like(Red House,Little Wing etc.) Would also like to know if you have any other websites. Thank you and keep up the awesome work.

Thanks! I don't have a "how to make website" tutorial, but there are several excellent ones on the net. Same to Hendrix, try searching Google with hendrix tab to get thousands of sites. Yes, I have other sites, I'm also doing webpages for my university and have a digital video page, which really needs an update...

hello.Mr Gerd Klaassen:
I visited your EC website recently.I think it's the most wonderful website I've ever met about one musician. The content of your website is very abundant and the accuracy of tabs or files or sort of things is undeniable. I've downloaded everything at your website. They are pretty good.I guess you must spend a lot of time on it, and youself must be a very good guitarist and musician. I am studying and practising what you write. From what you did,I've made up my mind to exalt Eric'music in China(I am a Chinese). I have some advises and question to ask.Advises first.I hope that there will be more your comments about EC's albums and songbooks .I can understand that you dont want to add too much personal factors into them. But without you,who we can trust? You are so familiar with Eric Clapton's everything and from what you did we can tell that you are good at playing guitar ,too. From your website,we can tell that we can believe in you and you are the authority of him.You can give some advises to the beginner(Like me) of blues or Eric'music about which albums and songbooks are commended to buy.I hope you will add more details to albums and songbooks. I have only seen one "a must buy".I want to see more such expressions. Please dont hesitate to add them. You are the best.and forgive my rudeness, can I have you ICQ number?Mine is 161589939.Contact me. I dont know weather you like other musicians .I like radiohead and alanis morissette, but I have never met a website as good as yours about them .If you like them also, why dont you create some or you can tell where I can find.Thank you There are some questions remains.I am the beginner of blues .And I am try to learn it from your things. But there are some markers I dont understand.First "---5b-5b---",what's the meaning of"5b",especially the"b";second "\5-3---3",what's the meaning of "\" especially. I think this site is very useful, the structure and layout is magnificent and the songs are finished properly. I do have whowever one request, and that is that I've noticed that the song"Lonely Stranger" isn't finished all that good. I do know that this is your least favourite song on the album "Unplugged" but that doesn't mean you should neglect it. Therefore I ask of you kindly to review this song once more.

Try this ;)

Hi, I'm eddie, from Italy. Thank you for having created such a great and smart site for anyone like me who can't pay for guitar lessons but still wants to learn how to play the blues. After wasting many years in playing heavy metal I discovered blues and jazz music, being jazz too difficult for me I found a good dimension in blues, being also more simple in the theoric part. Anyway, great job, thank you!

I've been sober and clean for over 15 years and glad to see Eric geting together a place to sober up and learn a 12 step program. The blues have been the story of my life. I'm 51 and want to finally give it a go at learning the blues. I'm a very passionate and soulful type of person which is a trait of substance abusers. I have no visions of becoming a professional but just want to jam along with my headphones. Who knows maybe a band will develop but I'm not projecting to be just let down! Don't need that in my recovery. Plus I'm being treated for depression and PTSD from my tour in Viet Nam. It's a good release for me and get my mind off things and forget about things for a while! BB and Eric have been my idles since 1968! So I guess I couldn't ask for two more people to try to emulate! I'm so proud of Eric getting sober and hope he stays sober 1 more day! Forget tommorrow it never gets here! Time to stop rambling since I just drank a cup of expresso! If you get a chance, say hi to 'slow hand " for me. The farther we get from our last drink the closer we get to our next drink! Thanks, Don Roussey drowzee3@verizon.net
P.S. You've done a super job on this site. It's gonna take me a while to absorb all this!

Just a suggestion: when playing Walkin' Blues with a slide, isn't it better to turn down 5th string to open G? It makes it much easier to do the bass line.

Yes, it's easier. The way I describe is for beginners who don't want to use open tunings, they just have to change one string.

Do you by any chance know the chords to Believe In Life?

Anyone?

Gerd, I just have to let you know that this is one of the very very best guitar sites I've ever seen and since I spend WAY too much time in here looking at new music sites, I know that of which I speak. I am tremendously impressed-thank you for sharing your obsession, Lora:) ps-hey, where are the bass tabs? Hmmm?

I just found your sight and think it is tremendous. I will be busy here learning more than a few things that's for sure. Your instructions are very clear and the short recordings are very useful, especially to someone who hasn't played much in the last two decades.

Subject: Searching Tab

Hey. This is a great site!!! I have found everything ive been looking for here... except... bass tabs. I love all Eric Claptons songs and i can easily find tabs for the lead guitar parts but i can not find the bass parts to his songs. If anyone has a good site or something... please email me @ wpspace@aol.com!!! Thanks so much. Again, this is a great site! Keep up the good work. © 2003 by Gerd Klaassen.
