Can't possibly play a song the same way twice!!!

Postby Blindboy » Wed Apr 25, 2012 6:53 am

Here are two examples of the same song, an instrumental, played a week apart, one on the Strat, one on the Casino. Same amp, same settings (allowing for the different tone settings required for the different pickups), similar volume, different guitars, different mood, different feel. Both of these are pretty much improv... the progression is set, but each night, the dynamics and feel are totally up in the air. Sometimes it works. :fingerscrossed: sometimes it doesn't :wall: Both of these are OK, but they are pretty different.

We get a bit lost on the Strat version... that can happen. I think it was my fault, but I tried to hide it.

A pub with dimmed lights and lot of cigarrsmoke in the air. It sounds good to me.
Allways listen to blues, but don't try to be someone else but you. Play your style.

Both sound great in their own way...

I remember a story about the making of Blues Brothers 2000 (we all know the first one is better, but...) when BB King was asked to do playback or to play a song twice the same way - he said he can't do that!

Yes. A saw a clip on you tube and then hi said the same. Can't play the same twice. In that respect BB and I have the same "handicap".

Nice sunny day here today. No clouds in the sky. Not even a soundcloud. Message says they are busy trying to bring things back online.
Too bad, I was curious how those different recordings would compare. I'll check back later.

Over here at the coast it's rainy as usual. One of the coldest and wettest springs ever. Lots of soundclouds full of Blues in the sky...

Ok, finally checked back and I now have cloud cover.

Man, Bb, the Casino is a great sounding guitar, but there's nothing wrong with that Strat either. Recording wise I think the version with the Casino is a better cut/mix.
But then, I have a conflict of interest.

A pleasure to listen to both versions - just such good playing!

Not a surprise to hear the Casino and the Strat sound so different - that's one of the interesting things for me about having different guitars - each one makes you want to / makes you have to play in a different style - I guess because of things like the balance, the weight, the dimensions, the neck shape and feel, and the way the different types of pickups react differently to what you do on the strings. Which for me is why a modelling guitar will never quite replace having several guitars, no matter how good the tone emulations are.

It's great to play a genre that allows it to be different every time - must be a danger of it getting very dull if a song is exactly the same every time.
I was trying to find "that" tone - then I realised there's lots of tones to find!
Now I'm more confused - i think I'm looking for playability as much as tone.

Thats correct, men can never play 2 the same song live.
I try here to play a noodling with a bt but every time it goes wrong because i can't remember how it goes the time before.

But i like the 2 ways youre playing it
play guitar like the wind, mysterious but definitely present....

Thanks for the kind words, fellers. :D
VB, you are right... I like to say that each guitar has a different story to tell, a different song to sing. (that is my excuse for having nine of them...) I have tried modeling guitars and they just leave me cold. :icon_whoknows:
I agree with y'all that it is good to play in a genre that encourages sounding different. I like to play the way I am feeling at the time.
I have such a fetish about not sounding like other players that I rarely listen to much recorded music. (aside from here on 12bar) I should probably listen to the original version of this tune though... I think we have gotten pretty far afield.

Yes, it may be all mental, but picking up a different kind of guitar does invoke a whole different aspect of playing. I Can't help believe it is what we have grown accustomed to by growing up listening to so many people play, and their guitars.....I mean uh hem,,,,,I think a lot of us here are a bit older.......uh mature shall I say!

We equate texas blues to SRV, on a strat, or EC on a strat, or BB king style on a semi hollow, or earlier guys like Tbone on a full hollow jazz box. I think a perceived notion of a certain "sound" does affect us all, and our playing.
