Trouble, trouble, I've had it all my days

Concert Review Cologne, March 8, 2001 - "An Evening with Eric Clapton" -

The Band: (as far as I know...)
Slowhand: Guitar, Vocals
Andy Fairweather Low: Guitar, Vocals
Nathan East: Bass, Vocals
Paulinho De Costa: Percussions
David Sancious: Keyboards, Guitar (Layla only)
Steve Gadd: Drums

Opener was Doyle Bramhall II, who maybe a good musician, but his sound was so bad that you couldn't hear a word or note. Too much feedback, distortion and echo over everything, the sound was really horrible. I expected the worst for EC.

After his show the equipment changed. New instruments and amps, a big carpet for EC in the center, smaller carpets for his band. They needed over 15 minutes for the change.

The EC appeared, all he said was "Hello". Just he and his Martin guitar, sitting on a chair and celebrating the Blues with Key to the Highway. The sound was much better now. A little echo from the Kölnarena (about 14.000 visitors), but everything was clear and his voice was great.

The guitar changed and the following song was the jazzy bossa-style Reptile from his new album. Tears in heaven followed ("the next song is about ten years old, maybe you remember"), but did not have the intensity of his unplugged album. But the performance was good anyway.

Bell Bottom Blues and Change the World followed, still acoustic. He didn't make a break between the songs, starting the new ones while there was still applause.

The acoustic part was finished, the (electric) Pilgrim part followed with My Father's Eyes (without slide), River Of Tears (great solo), Goin' Down Slow, She's Gone (great intro, but shorter than usual).

Than he played songs from his new album Repile: Got You On My Mind, Don't Let Me Be Lonely Tonight, Travelling Light. Great music.

The classics section started with Badge (for the crowd), Hoochie Coochie Man (still great performance) and than - Stormy Monday. For me definitely the highlight of the evening. Incredible guitar, incredible voice and a dramatic solo. Whenever you thought that note is impossible to top, he went into another level, pushing it to an unbelievable intensity.

Cocaine and Wonderful Tonight (for the crowd, but how can he still play this without getting boring?) were followed by the electric version of Layla. He got completely out of rhythm, I couldn't see the reason, but came back and finished his solo.

After leaving the stage for a few minutes (standing ovations) he came back with his band for the obligatory encore and played Sunshine Of Your Love. Not bad, but nothing new. While playing Somewhere Over The Rainbow (great voice, relaxed playing) he introduced the band.

A great concert with a really great band. Andy and Nathan harmonized good on backing vocals, they seemed to have fun with the percussionist and the keyboard player was excellent.

Than I got back into my car and drove another 3,5 hours back home.
